Exploring Romeo & Juliet Wine & Food Pairing

My wine weaknesses: Italian, fun labels, go with everything blends. These two have all of the above! In this edition of Supper Club Sips, we explored these two Italian beauties with good ol’ Texan comfort food.

Famiglia Pasqua Romeo & Juliet PassioneSentimento breaks rules with these two wines, which gets my immediate nod of approval. Made in the Veneto region by the appassimento technique, meaning hand picking and drying of the grapes, these wine should be expensive. And yet, they’re priced at under $20/bottle. The winemaker also had to negotiate with IGT authorities over naming. Read more about the label design from the graffitied wall in the courtyard of “Juliet’s house” in Verona here.

Wines we sampled:

Romeo & Juliet PassioneSentimento Bianco Veneto IGT

Romeo & Juliet PassioneSentimento Rosso Veneto IGT

We paired the Bianco with crafts and conversation while we waited for dinner. This dry white wine was well balanced between what you’d expect from a light sauvignon blanc and a heavy chardonnay. I absolutely loved it and will be looking for more to enjoy on the hot summer days ahead. We paired the Rosso with grilled steak, brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes, and chicken embrochettes. This dry red wine was exciting and paired perfectly with the black pepper on the steak and jalapeno in the embrochettes. Everything was delicious and I appreciate Creative Palate for sending over these fantastic samples, and our friends Cory and Sarah for cooking and hosting our Supper Club.
