One Night in Brussels

When my husband, friends, and I flew to Paris to attend a wedding in Germany, we enjoyed high speed train travel between pre- and post- wedding destinations such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris. Brussels was our last stop before returning back to Paris for our flight home, and a short stop it was!

Like in Amsterdam, we smartly stayed at a lovely Marriott in the center of historic Brussels, so we were within short walking distances from many points of interest.

We were in Brussels for less than 24 hours, so the first item on the to-do list after we arrived and dropped our bags at the hotel was lunch. We popped in a Sicilian restaurant (now closed) for carby walking fuel and of course, wine.

From there we wandered all over the city and saw attractions like Town Hall, Cathedral of St. Michael ans St. Gudala, Manneken Pis (yes, the little statue-fountain of the pissing boy), Galerie de la Reine, the Smurf Store, and Grand-Place (my favorite).

With my love of piazza dining, it was no surprise that I’d gravitate to Le Roy d’Espagne for more wine and carby walking fuel. We enjoyed Belgian beer, chocolate, and waffles (because when in Belgium…) and people watched from an outside table. And a completely coincidental time to be in Brussels, we were able to watch the city set up the Flower Carpet from Le Roy, which evidently happens every two years in August.

We enjoyed our almost full day in Brussels, had a good night’s sleep that night, and took the train back to Paris the next morning after I went for a run (read I’ve Run Everywhere, Man: Vacation Running here). Do you have any recommendations for our next trip to Belgium?
