Costuming a Shelby Brother from Peaky Blinders

Around this time last year we were marathoning Peaky Blinders and loving every bit of that 1920s-1930s style. And this was around the time we were planning our New Year’s cruise to ring in the 2020’s, and absolutely planning to wear 1920s outfits on the cruise. So I zeroed in on one of Polly Gray’s outfits that I could reproduce, and my husband found a Pearky Blinders men’s collection from which he could purchase a 3-piece suit. I found more accessories on Amazon, and now he has a Shelby Brother capsule wardrobe.

A Shelby Brother’s Capsule Wardrobe

Usually I sew my costumes, but men’s tailoring is way above my skill set. So my husband found the Peaky Blinders collection on Tru Clothing. We selected a charcoal grey 3-piece suit, a coodinating blue vest, and a shirt with removable wing tip collar from Tru Clothing. His other accessories I purchased from Amazon with the intention of giving him enough options to dress for day or night events. I bought him a brown wool newsboy hat years ago in Ireland, so I found a navy one on Amazon, as well as fedora. I also purchased three tie and pocket square sets in grey, charcoal, and brown. Add clips and a pockewatch and I think he’s all set!

Jerome has worn some combination of his Peaky attire three times so far, but the only time with good enough lighting for photos was at Dickens on the Strand in Galveston last December. It’s typically still warm here in the Houston/Galveston area during that time, so he went casual that day. He is pictured above top right with our sassy friend Melissa, who borrowed my outfit for the day, and with me above bottom in my Regency gown. I hadn’t made my Polly Gray costume at that time, but it is pictured below from later in December. Once we get out of this pandemic, I’m sure we’ll have more opportunities to wear our Peaky Blinders ensembles, and party like one should in the 20s.
