Champagne Cork Cap Magnets (DIY)

I collect wine corks, as well as the cute Muselet cage caps from Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, and really any sparkling wine.  While I have many, many uses for corks (read my Cork Craft Round-Up here), I never really knew what to do with the caps until I found a listing for magnets on Etsy.  I had collected over 50 caps and decided my close crafty friends would get a magnet set this year for Christmas.  I kept a few for myself, as some have sentimental value.  They were so easy to make, so I’m sharing that simple process here!

These magnets only need E6000 glue (E6000 230010 Craft Adhesive), strong craft magnets (Strong Ceramic Industrial Magnets), and something raise the magnet out of the concave space beneath the cap.  Because I’m clumsy and don’t want to scratch my fridge with the cap edges, I cut about 3/4″ circles out of 6mm foam.  Felt furniture pads (1/2-Inch Self-Adhesive Felt Furniture Pads, 24-Pack) would also work just fine.  A few tips:

  • Stagger magnets on a metal cookie sheet to keep them from moving around
  • Glue felt or foam to magnet first, let dry overnight
  • Glue caps to felt/foam the next day, let dry overnight
  • The caps will be attracted to the magnets, so keep them a good distance apart from each other during gluing
