Last year I came to DragonCon in Atlanta with my Burlesque Loki costume. The costume itself was very easy to make, and very striking when completed, but the helmet/horns were quite the challenge. I was so intimidated by the project that I put it off and made it after the rest of the outfit. The helmet was deserving of it’s own post (Costuming (Burlesque) Loki: The DIY Helmet), and the rest of the burlesque costume is here.

My inspiration was Thor film Loki, a little comic book Femme Loki, a piece of jewelry I saw on Pinterest, and pieces I had from prior costumes. And many Amazon purchases, because why reinvent the wheel? You might recognize the black corset from my Ursula costume and the feather bolero from my Jareth costume. I love double-duty pieces!
Anna of Darkstar Photography and Costuming snapped this photo of me before meeting up with the rest of the Burlesque Superheros and Villains group at DragonCon. More of her photography and costuming can be found on her Facebook page.
I’ll start with the pieces I made and then share Amazon purchases after. I purchased the hammered gold necklace on Etsy (vendor is no longer selling, so I’ll share a similar necklace on Amazon below), and then added gold chain in cascades underneath the necklace to achieve the look I found on Pinterest. Also inspired by Pinterest was the lace tulip skirt at my hips. I have no pictures from building these two pieces because they are easy to duplicate by sight.
A huge challenge (for me, anyway) was the 5 yards of green chiffon, and how to make it fabulous without majorly screwing up the fabric. I had never done a rolled hem before, so I was scared to cut the fabric. What I ended up doing was sewing satin bias ribbon on the rough edges, and then draped and looped the fabric from one shoulder down to the floor, up to my waist, over a drawstring, down to the floor again, and up to the other shoulder. It ended up being the perfect length!
I pleated the ends at the shoulders and sewed them into a long ribbon that would be tied like a bolero under the feather bolero. I love this piece, its striking yet so simple!
Rather than carrying around a prop, I made a fun cosmic cube ring from a purchase on Etsy. I simply glued the LED “ice cube” to the inside of the tesseract, and glued the cube to a cheap ring base. If/when the light goes out, I should be able to replace it rather easily.
And finally, I decided my Burlesque Loki needed more feathers, more gold, and a cosmic ton of attitude. With spare feathers from my Jareth costume cape, I made arm wraps (inspired by Pinterest) and a fun feather plume that I attached to a headband. I added leftover gold chain from the necklace to the tops of my over-the-knee boots and called it a day.
The additional accessories and layers that I purchased on Amazon were:
- Wig Grip (Milano Collection Original WiGrip Wig Comfort Band in Tan)
- Sequinned bra (Yinwes Corset Lingerie Women Party Beading Bra Metallic Bra (Green, XL))
- Ruffle panties (Leg Avenue Micromesh Lace Ruffle Tanga Short, Black, One Size)
- Dance Tights (Capezio Women’s Ultra Shimmery Tight, Light Toast)
- and the necklace I promised (Boderier Statement Collar Necklace Gold Metal Bib Choker)
We brought the burlesque squad to AllCon in Dallas as well and had a blast. Aren’t these ladies lovely??
