Like most wine and beer lovers, last holiday season got me excited about all the new Advent calendars. For those unfamiliar, Advent calendars count the Advent days leading up to Christmas, and some families enjoy chocolates, toys, or riddles for each of the 24 days in theirs. In my house, wine is king.

My excitement for a wine Advent calendar turned to extreme frustration with the local German family-owned discount stores here in the Houston area releasing their limited Advent calendars earlier than advertised, only to be sold out way before the official release date, and indifferent shrugs from clerks saying “maybe come back in a week, we might get more.” What a waste of our time driving around Houston. Pissed and impatient Sheila (that’s me) found Vinebox‘s 12 Nights of Wine and spent twice what Aldi that discount store was charging for their Advent calendars. And you know what? It was WORTH IT.
This posh box arrived containing twelve single-glass vials of wine and was the first present under our tree. The vials were unlabeled on the top except for day numbers, so every night we enjoyed a surprise wine. There wasn’t a single glass of wine we didn’t like and Vinebox gained my loyalty immediately. Fast forward to this year…I’ve already pre-ordered Vinebox’s 12 Nights of Wine, but this time I purchased both the Naughty and Nice boxes at a little bit of a discount.
Word on the street is that these Advent calendars sell out pretty quickly (was it in four weeks last year?) so if you’re like me, maybe just go ahead and pull the trigger on the credit card now. And if you’re patient, like to gamble, and don’t mind stalking that other store…may the odds be ever in your favor! I’ve already shopped for myself this season. Cheers!
