Every year during Labor Day weekend, I attend DragonCon in Atlanta, one of the largest pop culture conventions in the United States. While it’s not the largest and the most widely known, it is my version of a costuming Super Bowl. As DragonCon 2017 has passed, I continue to take a look back at what I (including my husband and niece) have worn in prior years. In 2014 before learning how to sew, I only brought four costumes for four days.
DragonCon 2015 Costume Schedule
Thursday Evening – Barden Bellas and Sigma Beta Theta from Pitch Perfect
Friday Evening – Catelyn Stark and Littlefinger from Game of Thrones
Saturday Day – Star Trek (The Next Generation)
Saturday Evening – Tasha Lem from Doctor Who (The Time of the Doctor)
Sunday Evening – Tasha Lem and Star Trek (Original Series)
Barden Bellas and Sigma Beta Theta from Pitch Perfect
Flight attendants? Close…we’re Barden Bellas from one of my favorite films, Pitch Perfect. And my husband is that popped collar “this makes my beer taste bad” douche from the SBT mixer scene. This was a very comfortable costume to wear on our first night at DragonCon and we absolutely did get mistaken for flight attendants.
2014 seems like a long time ago, even though it isn’t. Tech-wise, that was two iPhones ago (and pre-Nikon 5500), so all the photos taken by us at DragonCon are poor quality. Thankfully, our friend Peter of Peter Airborne Photography captured out costume shenanigans. Thank you, Peter!
Catelyn Stark and Littlefinger from Game of Thrones
On our second night we wore Catelyn Stark and Littlefinger out and about. Not knowing many people at DragonCon, we visited a little, then went in to the restaurant by Pulse Bar in the Marriott Marquis and drank wine. Since this was before I learned how to sew, we purchased these costumes online, and I made my cloak out of a curtain, hot glue, and a coyote hide.
Thanks again to Peter Airborne Photography for capturing these shots of us.
Star Trek (The Next Generation)
During the day at DragonCon we either wear civilian clothes or our Star Trek TNG uniforms. They’re comfortable enough for walking and Atlanta heat. We also purchased these costumes online, however I purchased my communicator badge over 20 years ago at a Star Trek convention in Houston. I love that thing and even hid it in my bouquet when we got married.
Tasha Lem from Doctor Who (The Time of the Doctor)
My “big” costume that year was Tasha Lem, a standalone character in the Doctor Who Christmas special, The Time of the Doctor. I thought that costume was so striking I just had to make it. I don’t think many, if anyone actually recognized it, but it was lovely regardless. I really want to drag it out of the closet and wear it again one day.
Here are more shots by Peter Airborne Photography…yeah I know I can’t keep a straight face.
Tasha Lem and Star Trek (Original Series)
On Sunday night we just wore whatever we felt like. Jerome and Brittany wore their Star Trek TOS uniforms and I wore Tasha Lem again. Sundays at DragonCon are hot and crowded at DragonCon, so we dressed for comfort (or as comfortable as you can get in that heat).
