Fun fact: San Antonio, Texas is my most visited city. I lived there as a child and consider it my second home, so I visit quite often. I love the culture, the history, and even the tourist traps. These are a few of my favorite things…
What I Like to Do
My number one must-do is walking around downtown San Antonio and the Riverwalk. I know it’s the touristy thing to do, but there’s just so much packed into such a small area. During the holidays (from before Thanksgiving until after the New Year), lights hang from trees and line the walkways, making it that much more beautiful. My personal favorites are:
- Walk around downtown and San Antonio Riverwalk (I DO recommend a boat tour)
- Visit a winery or two (either one near the city, or one on the way home via Fredericksburg)
- Six Flags Fiesta Texas
- Shopping at Market Square
What I Like to See
Within the downtown area and the Riverwalk there are a few old missions (the most famous being the Alamo) and several more within a short driving distance. My personal favorites are:
- The Alamo and surrounding missions
- The Briscoe Western Art Museum off the Riverwalk
What I Like to Eat
I can’t/won’t visit San Antonio without eating my weight in Tex-Mex and/or BBQ. Brunch at Mi Tierra is far from the typical trendy mimosa and avocado toast crowd and so worth the wait. There’s also a famous cafe serving the biggest cinnamon rolls you’ve ever seen just outside of downtown. Sorry diet, you don’t travel with me to San Antonio. My personal favorites are:
- Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery in Market Square
- County Line BBQ (yes, it’s a chain, and no, I don’t care) on the Riverwalk
- Lulu’s Bakery and Cafe (definitely share the 3 lb cinnamon roll and take that beast home)
What I Like to Drink
Wine, always. And occasionally a margarita. When in San Antonio, I stick to a strict “Texas only” selection of wines from our great state. Since I usually stay in the downtown San Antonio/Riverwalk area, I love to happy hour up in the Tower of the Americas with a perfect panoramic view of the city and hill country. I also enjoy wine and margaritas in one of the touristy restaurants on the Riverwalk while people watching. My personal favorites are:
- Happy hour at Chart House in Tower of the Americas
- Wine and people watching at Ostra on the Riverwalk at the Omni
- Margaritas and tequila flights at Iron Cactus on the Riverwalk
And because I love San Antonio so much, I often go for races. It’s a great excuse for a road trip and to see San Antonio at about 5 miles an hour (read: I’ve Been Everywhere, Man: Destination Racing).
It’s difficult to see everything San Antonio has to offer in a weekend, therefore I recommend several leisure trips. What are some of your favorite San Antonio things?
