Costuming Themysciran Senators from Wonder Woman: Accessories

I never intended to make most of the costumes in the Wonder Woman film, but that seems to be what is happening.  Last year I made a Themysciran village Amazon costume and Diana Prince’s stunning blue gala dress, also started working on a Warrior, and have been helping friends with their Menalippe and Hippolyta costumes.  AND these lovely throne room Senators.  Because these costumes have taken almost a year to make, there are A LOT of build pictures, so I’ve divided the Senator posts into three: Accessories, Corset/Skirt/Cape, and the impromptu photo shoot we did in Houston with a friend of mine.  This post contains the headpiece, arm band, arm bracers, apron/flap, and boots.

I’ve included the reference photos I was able to find from various resources including Pinterest, Google, and Amazon Sisters of Themyscira group on Facebook.

I’m also sharing my sloppy sketches that include fabric layouts for both 56-60″ wide fabric (ideal) and 43″ wide fabric (what I purchased), and how I thought the boot covers should look based on the few Senator reference images out there.

The easiest pieces from this costume were the headpiece and arm band, both using foam and patterns courtesy of Epoch Echo Cosworx.  I *think* the armband pattern is included free with the purchase of the headpiece.

The arm bracers were slightly more complex, although Epoch Echo does have a pattern for purchase.  I drafted my own pattern for the Senators/Warriors that are less detailed that Wonder Woman’s.

I finished these pieces according to Epoch Echo Cosworx’ directions, including Performix Plasti Dip Black and spray paint (Rust-Oleum Universal, Metallic Pure Gold as the main color on the headpiece and arm band with Rust-Oleum Universal, Metallic Champagne Mist and Rustoleum Universal, Aged Copper sprayed lightly as accent), accented with brushed Rust-Oleum Universal, Metallic Satin Nickel and sealed with Rust-Oleum Clear Shellac Spray.  The arm bracers’ coloring were nickel for the main color and accented with pure gold.

I used adhesive felt (Darice Felties Sticky Felt Sheets) to protect the foam pieces from sweaty skin, and vice versa.  Closures for the headpiece and arm band only needed elastic, but I used a combination of elastic and thin leather (Leather Hides – Various Colors (DARK BROWN)) for the arm bracers.  I let the elastic do the work, and the leather is only for aesthetics.  I also used gold round head Chicago screws (30 Pack Gold Round Head Button Stud Slotted Screws 8x10x10mm Chicago Screws Nail Rivet For DIY Leather Craft) and gold flat head Chicago screws (30 Sets 4x6mm Chicago Screws Assorted Kit Nail Rivet Chicago Button For DIY Leather Decoration Document Book Album Bookbinding Slotted Round Head Stud Screw ( Gold + Bronze + Black )) accenting the leather closures.

I made the front apron flap about 8″ wide with 2mm foam, and I glued ~.25″ wide 2mm foam strips parallel with the bottom angle (intentionally not equal spacing).  I finished the flap with Performix Plasti Dip Black and Automotive spray (Dupli-Color EHVP11000 Burgundy High Performance Vinyl and Fabric Spray).  Covering the flap in fabric to match the cape and skirt is optional, but I did.  I purchased 8 yards Kaufman linen in Bordeaux (Robert Kaufman Kaufman Essex Linen Blend Bordeaux Fabric By The Yard, Autumn Red) for the flap, skirt, and cape.

I probably put more work into the boots than I needed to, but I was going for screen accuracy.  In the Pinterest reference photo above, the actress has her skirt pinned back so I was able to get a great look at the boot covers.  I made a pattern for my boots (Jessica Simpson Women’s Baiden Riding Boot, Honey Brown, 8 M US), cut 3mm foam, and covered the foam pieces in thin leather (same leather used for arm bracers).  I stitched the leather in place and hot glued it on the back side.

I also cut thin strips of leather and weaved them into each wide segment of the boot covers.  For any foam peaking out, I painted black with a marker.  For this reason I would recommend black foam, but the marker method works just fine!  And then the final step was attaching elastic to the leather strips to secure the covers to my boots and make sure Amelia approved.  She did, and she brought me Frog.

Now that the accessories are out of the way…
