Costuming a Hufflepuff from Harry Potter

I’m a little (okay, a lot) late to the party, but I just finished reading all of the Harry Potter books. I loved them so much that current and planned costumes got pushed aside so I could make a bunch of Harry Potter costumes. Hogwarts house robes, Quidditch uniforms, McGonagall, Snape, Bellatrix…I should really stop there. This post is dedicated to the Hufflepuff house robes and uniform that I made and put together for our niece Brittany.

The easiest part was assembling uniform pieces from Amazon and Etsy for Brittany’s Christmas present, links are below. The more difficult task was the house robes that I began making in January. There are a lot of tutorials out there, but the one I found the most helpful and used as a guide was this tutorial by the Half Blood Sisters. I followed their instructions almost to the letter, the only exception was stitching bias tape to the inside of the sleeves at the shoulders for added strength.

Per Half Blood Sisters’ suggestion, I also added tassels to the hood tips for weight and detail, though I bought a pack of all black tassels (VAPKER 100 Pieces Black Tassels 13cm/5-Inch Silky) so myself and friends from multiple houses can use them. Same with black frog closures (Chinese Knots Frog Buttons Closure Knot Cheongsam Handmade Sewing Fasteners,Black).

The Uniform

Button down shirt (Brittany is wearing white in large): HOTOUCH Women Collared Button Down Long Sleeve Dress Shirt

Pleated skirt (grey, size 18 in girls): French Toast Big Girls’ Pleated Skirt

Hufflepuff sweater (yellow, sleeveless, large): WOTOGOLD Cosplay Costumes unisex Vest Sweater Fall and Winter Waistcoat

Tights (black, opaque, large): No Nonsense Women’s Super Opaque Control Top Tight

House ties (we bought all 4): LilMents 4 Pack Pinstriped Formal Necktie Tie Set (Multicolored Set A)

Patch for sweater (we bought a 5-pack): Harry Potter Patch Set – Applique Patches Crest – Official – Cinereplicas (Classic Set of 5)

Patch for robes: Harry Potter House of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin House Hogwarts Crest Patch Hook and Loop Backing

Regarding the screen accuracy (or inaccuracy) of the sweater patch and sweater/skirt colors, I’m okay with the colors being too light or too dark compared to those worn in the films. Since we’re making robes and gathering uniforms for myself, my husband, and close friends, we went with cost efficiency. I also added the patch on the sweater for fun, and for costume recognition when worn without robes. The key word here: fun!

The wand was a special find made by my favorite wine barrel craftsman on Etsy, Wine Country Craftsman. I bought a gorgeous set of 5 wands on clearance after his shop crafted 250 wands for a wedding in Scotland. These remaining 5 wands became gifts for myself and others. We picked out the wand in the middle for Brittany.

Brittany is very happy with her new costume, and I am very proud that hers, the first of many house robes I’ve made and will make this year, turned out well!
