Considering Wine in a Can

My body may not be ready for summer, but like it or not summer is here.  It’s hot and I’m thirsty!  I’m usually a red wine drinker but in the summer I tend to drink more rose and white wine.  So let me go on record, again, and say that I’m not a wine snob.  I drink what I like, regardless of vintage, vineyard, or varietal.  If I like something it makes no difference to me what the cork is made of, whether the bottle has a screw-top, or if there’s no bottle at all.  Pretentiousness has no place in my wine cellar or in my circle of friends.  So now consider: wine in a can.

Wine in a can may not be a new thing, per se, but I’m seeing an increase on the market recently.  I’m so on this bandwagon and I don’t care who judges me.  Lightweight, portable, less waste, and very camouflaged…how could it be wrong?  Here are the two new (to me) canned wines that I’ve tried this spring (with notes from the winemakers).

Stella Pinot Grigio 2016

Sicily

$13 (four pack of 250ml cans)

Sheila’s Notes: They had me at their clever label/can graphics with a spirited girl adventuring on a Vespa.  Could be me, especially if the dress has pockets.  I enjoyed the hell out of this light and refreshing Pinot Grigio on an open air short school bus riding around Houston during a tour of the history of our River Oaks District.  This fun wine paired well with the fun staycation experience (Mr. McKinney Historic Houston).  By the way, a link to the cute SWiG insulated wine tumblers we’re using are at the bottom of this post.

Origin: This Pinot Grigio from Sicily captures afternoons in piazzas near the sea, with refreshing Mediterranean breezes cooling down hot summer days.

Tasting Notes: That Mediterranean sun really makes those fresh citrus, white peach, and pear aromas shine!

Pairings: Enjoy with friends while lounging pool-side or over light hors d’oeuvres, salads and simple pastas.

Yes We Can Sway Rose

100% Texas High Plains

$16 (four pack of 187ml cans)

Sheila’s Notes: I had the pleasure of enjoying this rose at Revival Market last month at a tasting led by William Chris Vineyard and Lost Draw Cellars (both proud Texas wineries).  I loved the liquid genius created by Chris Brundrett of William Chris and Andrew Sides of Lost Draw…as the story goes, about a year and a half ago they got drunk and decided to start Yes We Can Wine (rosé in a can!). That’s pretty much how I make great decisions too (grad school…cruise reservations…I could go on…)!  So I made another great decision to purchase three 4-packs for summer shenanigans.

Tasting Notes: Medium-bodied and incredibly aromatic on the nose. Peachy in color, the wine itself has hints of guava, passion-fruit, fresh strawberries and honeysuckle, leaving the palate with a crisp, refreshing finish.

Pairings: Pairs well with anything, from potato chips to caviar, bolognese to barbacoa tacos.

Join me, my fellow non-snobs, in considering wine in a can.  We don’t judge here.  Cheers to the summer, poolside refreshments, sneaking wine into movies, celebratory hiking sips, and whatever silly shenanigans you’re into!  Have you tried any wine in a can?
