One Night in the Country: A Review of Silverwood Country Retreat

Last fall I was gifted one night stay at Granny’s Bed & Breakfast at Silverwood Country Retreat in Waller, Texas.  Sound familiar?  It should if you’ve ever run Wicked Wine Run Houston or Mud Run, because those races are on the Silverwood property.  After puppy potty training through the winter (read: not a single full night’s sleep), my husband and I needed a quick getaway.  So I booked a night at the B&B following last month’s Spartan Sprint (a very muddy obstacle race) about a 15 minute drive from the race.  The race went well, we got ridiculously muddy, and desperately needed to rest.  We negated any burned calories with a huge burger after the race, picked up a bottle of Texas wine on the way to the B&B, and checked in early afternoon.

The ranch house was larger than expected, and reminded me of my great grandparent’s home in Louisiana with large porch, full open kitchen, and cozy rooms.  We could’ve brought more people with us (and may do so in the future), as the cabin had two bedrooms and two bathrooms.  It could comfortably sleep 6.  We LOVED the screened-in porch with its wicker and rocking chairs (and zero mosquitos), and we enjoyed a bottle of Becker Iconoclast out there as the sun went down.  The B&B is so charming with it’s antique elements, we felt very comfortable and really enjoyed the tranquility of being out of the city.

We didn’t make it much past sundown.  We slept like the dead for about 10 hours, and it was glorious!  Feeling refreshed the next morning, we walked around a little bit, said “hello” to the cows, and packed up for our short trip back to Houston.  It was blissfully quiet and we were reluctant to leave.

I definitely recommend Granny’s B&B for a quick, quiet, cozy, and casual getaway from Houston.  I’d even recommend timing your stay around one of the races they have in the area or on the Silverwood property…if you can make a reservation before I do (good luck!).  And to Clara from Silverwood, thanks for making our stay so lovely!
