A Quick Edwardian Boater Hat

For my first foray into historical costuming the Edwardian era, I wanted to keep things light and simple. During these quarantimes, I’m working on stash-busting sewing projects, so to match my new coastal blue linen Edwardian walking skirt, I chose a casual look. It’s hot here in Houston, and if/when I wear this anywhere, I want to stay cool. Might even go to Galveston and stroll along the beach like so many black and white photos from this time period. Coastal boater it is!

Supplies

Ridiculously cheap costume boater hat: Skimmer Hat, Amish Hat, Boater, Straw Hat, Sailor, Roaring 20’s – Costume Accessories by Tigerdoe

1 1/4″ black grosgrain ribbon: Humphrey’s Craft 1-1/2 Inch Black Grosgrain Ribbon – 25 Yards

Rooster feathers: Sowder Rooster Hackle Feather Fringe Trim 5-7″ in Width Pack of 5 Yards(Black)

Tea (12 bags for this project)

So I tea stained the hat, darkening it just a little bit, and let it dry outside with a heavy flat thing to keep the crown flat. I read reviews that the brim could be ironed, but I didn’t need to. In one evening I covered the existing 1″ band with the wider grosgrain ribbon, a double bow, and some rooster feathers that I curled with my fingernail. I hot glued all of it…so satisfying! Talk about a fast project!
