I’ve always wanted to go to the Bunny Hutch party at DragonCon, despite negative reviews from other con goers…only because I wanted to make a cute costume. So that’s exactly what we did in 2019. I turned our otherwise vanilla Dana Scully and Fox Mulder costumes from The X-Files into bunny and Heff versions…

The first (and only?) time we’ve worn our Scully and Mulder costumes was to DragonCon 2015. I mean, check out the old Marriott carpet! This was a very easy costume to put together, wear, and walk around the convention in. The X-Files is one of my favorite all time shows, but we never brought the costumes back. Our wigs and FBI badges would be used for our Bunny Hutch costumes.

I tend to not want to start everything from scratch, so I purchased a cheap set of bunny ears on Amazon and remade them. Lazy or efficient? Anyway, I removed the cheap fabric from the ears and used it to make a pattern. I wanted my Scully ears to feature her classic button down shirt, so I upcycled a boyfriend shirt-dress a friend gave me (thanks, Barb!) for this costume. I also used the collar and cuffs from the dress. I used scrap black satin for the backs of both ears, and extended the fabric to form a tab at the bottom to secure them to the headband. Then I used satin bias tape for the edges and top stitched around the ears (not bottom). I rewrapped the headband in satin ribbon, slipped the ears onto the wire, and glued the tabs around the headband. Then I cut “Trust No One” on iron-on vinyl for the backs of the ears. I loooooove them!

My husband’s robe was a little more work but just as fun. I printed the “I want to believe” poster to use as a pattern, cut iron-on vinyl letters, opened some wine, and sat down to paint fuzzy trees and a UFO on the back.

To complete Mulder’s outfit, we pulled a shirt, pants, and an ugly tie out of my husband’s closet. And I purchased some loafers, and a captain’s hat on Amazon, and glued on an X-Files patch to the front of the hat. To complete mine, commissioned an organza trench coat from a shop in the Ukraine. There’s no way I was going to walk around a convention with my bum hanging out. And finished it off with tights and pins as cufflinks from Amazon. The shoes and the belt were from my closet.

As for the Bunny Hutch party, it was as lame as I had heard. And the bar station lines were stupid long. And I wished the lights were brighter in the room so I could see everyone’s costumes, but it was very clublike. So these 40-somethings went to the hotel bar instead. I regret nothing.
