Comicpalooza, Texas’ largest comic book, pop culture, and entertainment convention, happened this past Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27, 2018) in Downtown Houston. I attended all three days and treated it as a costume deadline and cosplay dress rehearsal for another convention that we attend, DragonCon, during Labor Day weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a great venue to try out new costumes and bring back old favorites from the past. I wore four costumes in three days, and my husband, niece, and friends joined in on the fun for some of the costume changes.
I wore my Diana Prince costume from Wonder Woman on Friday, stayed at the Marriott Marquis Friday night, and enjoyed the Texas-shaped lazy river like I was on staycation. On Saturday morning, I wore my Claire costume from season 2 of Outlander for the first time to try out all the layers and 18th century shoes. Saturday afternoon/evening I wore my Dark Rey costume from Star Wars while my husband wore his new Jedi costume, our niece wore her new Jawa costume, and our friend Guest Blogger Aimee in her Rey costume. And then on Sunday I wore my Miranda Barlow costume from Black Sails (that I finished that morning!) while my husband tried out his screen used Red Coat from the show. Here are our highlights below, by day (or half day), including some selfies, outtakes, and other shenanigans at the very bottom.
Friday Highlights from Comicpalooza
Our niece Brittany was super darling in her Femme Beetlejuice costume and even found a Lydia! I wore my Diana Prince costume from Wonder Woman because it’s super comfortable, even with the boots, and we were able to walk the entirety of the convention before Saturday’s madness. Aimee wore her Battlestar Galactica costume (because comfort!) and got photobombed by R2D2 at some point. We met up with friends and even met new ones! Friday was fun!
Saturday Morning Highlights from Comicpalooza
Briefly on Saturday morning I wore my new Claire costume from season 2 of Outlander. I purchased this red dress from Jessica’s Dress and spent almost a year making the undergarments (panniers, petticoats, etc.) and shoes to wear with it, so I had to try everything on at Comicpalooza (even though most people I came across probably had no idea what the costume is from). My niece and I took some fun photos before I got a little warm and needed to change.
Saturday Afternoon/Evening Highlights from Comicpalooza
THIS was the best convention ensemble right here: all four of us in our Star Wars costumes looking like we’re about to drop an album. I wore my Dark Rey costume from Star Wars while my husband wore his new Jedi costume, our niece wore her new Jawa costume, and our friend Guest Blogger Aimee in her Rey costume. Knowing it would be a packed house, we were prepared with our most comfortable and fun costumes. With all of us in boots and tennis shoes, we comfortably walked the convention floor for hours and made friends (and drank wine and ate tacos). Saturday was the best day!!
Sunday Highlights from Comicpalooza
In true cosplay convention fashion, I finished Sunday’s costume the morning of, scrambled to put the whole getup on, and made a fashionably late appearance. I wore my Miranda Barlow costume from Black Sails while my husband tried out his screen used Red Coat from the show. We walked around a bit before getting hangry and treating our out-of-state friend Aimee to Xochi (a Oaxaca Mexican restaurant in Marriott Marquis) for lunch and drinks.
Outtakes, Selfies, and Shenanigans
I don’t normally share outtakes and other shenanigans on the blog, but we had too much damn fun to not share. So here are our selfies, “photoshoot” outtakes, and other shenanigans along the way. We had A BLAST!!!
This was my favorite Comicpalooza yet and I can’t wait to do it again next year! Did you attend, and if so, what did you wear/do/see??
